Preparing for Mohs Surgery
As you prepare for your upcoming Mohs surgery, Miami Mohs Surgeon Dr. Devorah Shagalov want to ensure you have all the information you need for a smooth experience and successful recovery. Please review the following instructions carefully.
On the day of your surgery, please bring your insurance cards, a list of your current medications, and any other documents we have requested. Please bring a book, other forms of entertainment and snacks as you may be at the office for many hours. For added support, consider bringing a family member or friend with you.
Avoid aspirin, aspirin-containing products, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Naproxen (Aleve) or other NSAIDS for 7 days before your surgery, as they can increase bleeding. If these are prescribed by your doctor for heart or stroke conditions, continue taking them.
- Do not discontinue medications like Coumadin, Xarelto, or Plavix, unless specifically instructed to do so by your cardiologist.
- Stop taking herbal supplements such as garlic, ginkgo, ginseng, ginger, Excedrin, Alka-Seltzer, vitamin E, and fish oil at least 72 hours prior.
- For pain relief, Tylenol is acceptable.
- Smoking: For improved healing, refrain from smoking 48 hours before and after the procedure until healed.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol 24 hours before and immediately after your surgery, as it can increase bleeding risks.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time.
- You are not required to fast. Have a normal breakfast or lunch, and bring a snack, as the procedure can be lengthy.
- Inform your physician if you have a pacemaker or defibrillator.
- Cancel all activities for the surgery day and possibly longer.
- You will receive detailed wound care instructions before leaving the office on your day of surgery.
